Tips for Athletes with Asthma

If you are athlete suffering from asthma or asthmatic conditions, don't let your asthmatic condition prevent you from being an athlete. Many athletes with asthma have been Olympic gold medal winners. Here are tips that might help if you are suffering from exercise induced asthma.

  • Choosing swimming over other sports might be better
  • Wear masks, which store heat and moisture from the air you breathe (ski masks)
  • Take preventer treatment before a sports/athletic event
  • Long-acting reliever inhalers are very helpful

If you are worried about medications and asthma drugs getting you disqualified, the good news is that most ordinary asthma medications are approved by sports organizations provided they are used under limit. Of course, like all other good advice make sure you check with your sporting organization or your doctor. But, in general they maybe approved.

Remember a lot of skiers, runners and other athletes get exercise induced asthma. But it can be managed, and let it not stop you from being athlete, there are lots of athletes and famous celebreties with asthma who have made it big and successful for themselves.
